We list it first because it is the tool we build and know best, not because it won an independent test, and we do not give it a score. --- ## What We Compared Each tool is described against five criteria: 1. **Output fidelity** — How closely the SVG matches the source 2. **Path cleanliness** — Minimal nodes, smooth curves, small file sizes 3. **Color accuracy** — Faithful reproduction without banding 4. **Processing speed** — Wall-clock time from upload to download 5. **Ease of use** — Can a non-designer get good results without tweaking? --- ## Master Comparison Table | Tool | AI? | Price | Batch? | Quality (1-10) | Speed | Best For | |---|---|---|---|---|---|---| | **VectoSolve** | Yes | From $0.11/conv | Yes | Not scored (our tool) | ~2-5 s | Best overall, API users | | **Adobe Illustrator** | Yes (Firefly) | Subscription | No | 9.0 | ~15-30 s | Professional designers | | **Inkscape** | No | Free | No | 7.5 | ~20-45 s | Budget, open-source | | **Vector Magic** | No | Subscription or one-time licence | Desktop only | 8.5 | ~8-12 s | Desktop power users | | **Vectorizer.ai** | Yes | Subscription | Yes | 8.0 | ~5-10 s | Online AI alternative | | **Convertio** | No | Free (limits) | Yes | 5.0 | ~10-20 s | Quick one-offs | | **AutoTracer** | No | Free | No | 6.0 | ~8-15 s | Simple logos only | | **Potrace** | No | Free (CLI) | Scripted | 6.5 | ~1-3 s | Devs, monochrome | | **CloudConvert** | No | Free (limits) | Yes | N/A | N/A | Vector format conversion only | | **Photopea** | No | Free (ads) | No | 7.0 | ~20-40 s | Photoshop alt users | > **Not in the table: Figma Vectorize.** Figma shipped it on 4 February 2026, the day after this comparison was published. It runs inside Figma Design and Draw on Professional plans and above, spends AI credits per run, and outputs colour, greyscale or black-and-white. It was added too late to get a row in the table. If you already pay for Figma Professional, try it on your own artwork before paying for anything else. --- ## Individual Reviews ### 1. VectoSolve — Our Own AI Converter [VectoSolve](https://vectosolve.com) analyzes images at the semantic level — it doesn't just trace edges, it understands shapes and reconstructs them as clean vectors. **Pros:** Full-color AI tracing, [batch mode](https://vectosolve.com/batch), [REST API](https://vectosolve.com/developers), SVG/EPS/PDF/[DXF](/convert/image-to-dxf) export, no install **Cons:** Downloads are paid ($6.99 for one file, or a plan from $7.99/month), no in-app node editing **Score:** not scored (our own tool) ### 2. Adobe Illustrator Image Trace — Best Professional The industry benchmark for manual control. Granular sliders for paths, corners, noise, and color limits that no other tool matches. The 2026 update improved corner handling and curve fitting, but the core engine remains classical tracing. **Pros:** Unmatched parameter control, full editing suite, industry standard **Cons:** Steep learning curve, 15-30 s/image plus tweaking, subscription only, no batch/API **Score: 9.0/10** ### 3. Inkscape — Best Free Inkscape's Trace Bitmap offers multiple modes (brightness cutoff, edge detection, color quantization) and outputs editable SVG natively. The most capable free option available. **Pros:** Free/open-source, full vector editor, cross-platform, active community **Cons:** Dated interface, complex images need cleanup, no AI, slower processing **Score: 7.5/10** ### 4. Vector Magic Excellent on logos and illustrations. Desktop version (one-time licence) offers offline processing and slightly better output than the web version. **Pros:** High-quality logo output, desktop + online, intuitive segmentation preview **Cons:** Premium pricing, limited batch, no API, struggles with photos **Score: 8.5/10** ### 5. Vectorizer.ai Newer AI-based entrant with solid quality, noticeably better than classical tracers on complex images. **Pros:** AI-powered, batch available, clean interface **Cons:** Paid subscription, occasional photo artifacts **Score: 8.0/10** ### 6. Convertio General-purpose converter whose raster-to-SVG tracing is basic and works best on simple, high-contrast graphics. **Pros:** Free tier, many format conversions, drag-and-drop **Cons:** Basic tracing tuned to simple graphics, inconsistent quality **Score: 5.0/10** ### 7. AutoTracer Free online tool for simple high-contrast images. Falls apart on gradients or detail. **Pros:** Free, no registration required **Cons:** Poor on complex images, no customization, limited formats **Score: 6.0/10** ### 8. Potrace Open-source CLI engine powering Inkscape's backend. Excels at monochrome artwork and scripted batch workflows. **Pros:** Free, extremely fast (1-3 s), scriptable, lightweight **Cons:** Monochrome only, CLI-only, requires technical setup **Score: 6.5/10** ### 9. CloudConvert General conversion platform for vector-format conversion (AI, EPS, PDF, DXF to SVG). It does not offer raster-to-SVG tracing, so PNG or JPG images cannot be vectorized here. **Pros:** 200+ format support, batch available, API access on all plans including free **Cons:** No raster-to-SVG tracing, 10 free conversions/day **Score: 5.5/10** ### 10. Photopea Free browser-based Photoshop alternative. Vectorization is a secondary feature but decent for simple tasks. **Pros:** Free, browser-based, trace and edit in one app **Cons:** Vectorization not primary strength, ad-supported, over-noded output **Score: 7.0/10** --- ### Also worth a look: VectorWitch [VectorWitch](https://vectorwitch.com) is primarily an AI SVG generator (text-to-vector), but it also accepts a reference image as input and converts it to vector, with 8 output styles and a built-in SVG editor. Plans start at $10/month for 100 credits, exports SVG, PDF, PNG and JPG. It was added after this comparison was written, so it sits outside the scored ranking. *Added June 12, 2026 after the VectorWitch team flagged their image-to-vector capability.* --- :::info **AI Vectorization vs. Classical Tracing** Classical tracing (Illustrator, Inkscape, Potrace) detects contrast boundaries and draws paths along pixel edges. It's deterministic but limited — no understanding of what shapes represent. AI vectorization (VectoSolve, Vectorizer.ai) uses neural networks trained on millions of image-vector pairs to *understand* shapes, producing fewer nodes, smoother curves, and smaller files. For simple logos the difference is subtle; for complex images it's dramatic. ::: --- ## Speed Processing time depends on image size, complexity, and connection, so the most reliable check is to time a few of your own files in each tool. > "The gap between AI-powered vectorization and classical tracing isn't incremental — it's generational. Once you see the difference in path cleanliness and node count, it's hard to go back." — VectoSolve team --- ## Our "Best For" Picks ### Best Free Converter **Inkscape** wins for users who need a capable free tool and don't mind a learning curve. For a simpler free experience, Photopea's browser-based approach requires no installation. ### AI Converter (Our Tool) **[VectoSolve](https://vectosolve.com)** is the AI converter we build, so we do not rank it against the others. Plans start at $7.99 a month for 25 conversions, or $49 a year. ### Best Professional Converter **Adobe Illustrator** remains the right choice for design teams that need pixel-level control and will edit vectors extensively afterward. ### Batch Converter (Our Tool) **[VectoSolve Batch](https://vectosolve.com/batch)** is purpose-built for high-volume workflows. Upload a folder and receive processed vectors in minutes. ### API (Our Tool) **[VectoSolve Developers](https://vectosolve.com/developers)** offers a REST API with documentation. --- :::tip **Test With Your Own Images Before Committing** Converter performance varies by content type. Before purchasing a subscription, upload 3-5 of your actual production images. Most tools (including [VectoSolve](https://vectosolve.com)) offer a free preview — take advantage of it. ::: :::warning **Watch Out for Fake Vectorization** Some free converters embed your raster inside an SVG container without actual tracing. The file extension changes but the image is still a bitmap. Open output in a vector editor and zoom to 400% — true vectors stay sharp at any scale. ::: --- ### API pricing, where the comparison actually changes The table above compares what a person pays to sit in front of a tool. Teams converting programmatically pay on a different grid, and it inverts one of the rankings. At the time of writing (February 2026), Vectorizer.ai's API sold credits by the month: 50 credits for $9.99 worked out to $0.20 an image, falling to about $0.05 an image once you committed to 100,000 ($4,999.99). Our own API is sold separately: credit lots on the [developers page](/developers) from $19.99 for 100 conversions, or monthly API plans on [/business](/business). Compare both grids at your own monthly volume. If you are in that band, say so on the way in — the honest answer is sometimes their grid. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### What is the best image to vector converter in 2026? It depends on what you are converting and what you do next. For a clean logo or a flat illustration, the free tools hold up: Inkscape's Trace Bitmap and Potrace both produce usable paths if you are willing to tune a threshold. For photographic sources, multi-colour artwork, or anything headed to a cutting machine, the AI converters pull ahead because they close contours and separate colours instead of tracing a single silhouette. VectoSolve is our own AI converter; Vectorizer.ai is a strong AI alternative, and if you already pay for Illustrator its Concept to Vector does the same job without another subscription. ### Can I convert an image to vector for free? Yes, and for simple artwork you should try that first. Inkscape and Potrace are free and open source with no limits at all. Photopea is free with ads in the browser. Affinity has been free for individuals since September 2025. Most paid converters offer a free preview so you can compare output on your own file before paying anything; ours gives one watermarked preview a day. Paying is worth it when you need volume, colour separation, or machine-ready formats — not for a single black-and-white logo. ### How much does image vectorization cost? Per image, between nothing and about a dollar depending on the tool. Free desktop software costs nothing but your time. At the time of writing (February 2026), Vectorizer.ai's API started around $0.20 an image and fell to $0.05 at very high volume. VectoSolve is $7.99 a month for 25 conversions, or $129 a year for 100 a month, which works out to about $0.11 each. Vector Magic listed $9.95 a month for unlimited online conversions, or $295 once for the desktop edition (February 2026 prices). ### Why does my converted SVG look wrong in Cricut Design Space? Almost always one of three things. The paths are open rather than closed, so the cutter reads an outline instead of a shape. The colours were not separated into layers, so everything cuts as one piece. Or the file carries strokes instead of fills, which Design Space renders but will not cut. A converter built for machines closes contours and layers colours automatically; a general-purpose tracer does not, and you end up fixing it by hand in the node editor. ### Which output format should I use? SVG for cutting machines, web use, and anything you will edit afterwards. DXF for CNC and CAD, since most controllers read it natively and many will not accept SVG. EPS or PDF when a print shop asks for it. PNG only if the destination cannot take vector at all. For embroidery you need a stitch file — DST, PES or JEF — which is a different thing from a vector and has to be generated for the machine, not exported from the SVG. ## The Verdict AI-powered tools have pulled decisively ahead of classical tracers. The gap is sharpest on complex images, where edge-tracing produces noisy, over-noded output requiring extensive cleanup. **[VectoSolve](https://vectosolve.com)** is our own tool: an AI engine with [batch](https://vectosolve.com/batch) and [API](https://vectosolve.com/developers) options, and a free watermarked preview so you can judge it on your own image. Need free? **Inkscape**. Need manual control? **Adobe Illustrator**. Need AI conversion with batch or API? **VectoSolve**, our own tool. ---
