Frequently Asked Questions

What is halftone?+
Halftone is a reprographic technique that simulates continuous-tone images using dots of varying size or spacing. It's the standard method for screen printing, newspaper printing, and retro graphic design. Larger dots represent darker areas, smaller dots represent lighter areas.
What does LPI mean?+
LPI stands for Lines Per Inch — the number of halftone dot rows per inch. Lower LPI (10-20) creates a bold, visible dot pattern ideal for screen printing and poster art. Higher LPI (30-60) produces finer, more photographic results.
What LPI should I use for screen printing?+
For most screen printing, use 20-35 LPI. T-shirt printing typically uses 25-35 LPI. Poster printing works well at 15-25 LPI for a bolder look. The coarser the mesh count of your screen, the lower LPI you should use.
What is the halftone angle for?+
The angle controls the rotation of the dot grid. 45° is the most common and visually pleasing angle — it minimizes visible alignment patterns. 0° creates horizontal rows, 90° creates vertical columns. For multi-color (CMYK) printing, each color uses a different angle to avoid moire patterns.
Can I use this for screen printing?+
Yes. This tool generates print-ready SVG halftone patterns. SVG files are ideal for screen printing because they scale to any size without quality loss. Upload your design, set LPI to match your screen mesh count, and download the SVG for your film positives.
What dot shapes are available?+
Three shapes: Round (classic halftone dots, most common), Ellipse (smoother tonal transitions, preferred for photographic reproduction), and Diamond (geometric aesthetic, popular in retro and pop art designs).

Shop owners: would automatic spot-color separations help?

We are weighing a tool that takes the vector you just made and outputs one print-ready film per ink color, registration marks included. It does not exist yet, and we only build what real shops ask for.

Yes, I would use that — tell us how you separate today

Or write to contact@vectosolve.com with the word separations.

Doing this for customers?

If screen printing is your business, you are probably paying per file.

An outside art service charges 6 to 26 dollars a logo and comes back the next day. Redrawing it yourself costs half an hour you could bill. A year here is $49 for 25 conversions every month, every machine format included, which works out cheaper than two outsourced logos.

Everything on this page stays free. This is only worth it if you do volume.
