What Happens When You Upload

6 things the tool does automatically so you can focus on digitizing

Extracts Every Color
Parses fills, strokes, and nested groups — finds every unique color in your SVG, even inside clip paths
CIEDE2000 Matching
Compares each color against thread catalogs using perceptual distance — not raw RGB, which is useless for thread
Shows Thread Codes
Returns the exact spool code you need — Madeira 1147, Brother ET-030, Isacord 2115 — not just "dark red"
Counts the Real Stitches
Generates the stitches at your hoop with the same engine as our DST/PES/JEF export, and reports the count the file declares
Calculates Thread Usage
Shows meters of thread needed per color at ~15m/1,000 stitches — know if you need a new spool before you start
Switches Brands Instantly
Toggle Madeira → Brother → Isacord — all colors re-match in milliseconds. No re-upload, no waiting

Picking Thread by Eye vs. Using This Tool

Picking Thread by Eye

  • Hold spool up to monitor — screen color ≠ thread color
  • Fluorescent lighting in your shop shifts perceived color
  • Madeira 1174 and 1175 look identical under warm light
  • Client approves mockup, rejects finished piece — "wrong red"
  • No way to cross-reference Madeira → Brother → Isacord
  • Sew a test stitch → waste 10 minutes + backing + stabilizer
Recommended

VectoSolve Thread Mapper

  • CIEDE2000 matches against manufacturer spectral values
  • Same result regardless of your monitor or room lighting
  • Exact spool code: Madeira 1147, not "some burgundy"
  • See ΔE distance — know if match is perfect or approximate
  • Cross-reference Madeira ↔ Brother ↔ Isacord in one click
  • Stitch count + thread usage estimates before you digitize

Rayon for sheen, polyester for durability — here's the real difference with specs that matter, not marketing copy.

5 Thread Color Mistakes That Ruin Embroidery

Matching thread to monitor color

Your screen shows sRGB. Thread is dyed fiber. Madeira 1174 "Christmas Red" looks fire-engine red on screen but is a deeper, richer burgundy on fabric. Trust the code, not the pixel.

Using rayon thread on workwear

Madeira Rayon loses luster after 20+ hot industrial washes. If the garment gets bleached or washed at 60°C, use Isacord polyester. Rayon is for fashion, poly is for function.

Too many color changes

Each thread change = stop the machine, trim, re-thread, re-tension. A 12-color design takes 3x longer than a 4-color one. Simplify your palette before digitizing.

Skipping the bobbin thread

Most digitizers forget: bobbin thread (60wt white or black) shows through on satin stitches if your density is too low. Match bobbin to garment color on light designs.

Not buying enough thread

A left-chest logo (10K stitches) uses ~150m of thread. A full-back jacket design (50K+ stitches) can eat 750m+ — nearly a full 1,000m spool. Always check the thread usage estimate before starting a production run.

Real Jobs, Real Thread Codes

How digitizers and embroidery shops actually use this tool

Corporate Logo Digitizing

Match brand PMS colors to Madeira thread before quoting — show the client exact thread codes in the proof

Uniform Production

Map 500-piece polo order to Isacord codes. Thread usage estimate = know exactly how many 5,500m cones to order

Etsy Embroidery Shop

Upload customer SVG, match to Brother thread (what you stock), ship without test stitches

Cross-Brand Matching

Digitizer specifies Madeira 1147, you only stock Isacord? Switch brands, get the equivalent in one click

Multi-Head Production

Before loading a 6-head Tajima, verify all 8 thread colors are in stock — stitch estimate tells you if you need new cones

Appliqué Planning

Identify which SVG colors should be stitched vs appliquéd — reduce thread changes from 12 to 4

Embroidery Thread FAQ

Technical questions from digitizers and embroidery shop owners

How does thread color matching work?

The tool extracts every unique color from your SVG and compares each one against our thread database using a perceptual color distance algorithm (CIEDE2000) weighted for human eye sensitivity. Green and yellow differences are weighted more heavily than blue — matching how embroidery thread actually looks on fabric, not how it looks on your monitor.

What thread brands are supported?

Madeira Rayon Classic (60+ colors, the most popular rayon thread worldwide — used in 80% of commercial embroidery shops), Brother Embroidery Thread (55+ colors, included with every Brother machine), and Isacord Polyester (55+ colors, the industry standard for commercial embroidery and contract work).

Madeira Rayon vs Isacord Polyester — which should I use?

Madeira Rayon has a high sheen and softer hand feel — the silk-like luster makes it ideal for decorative embroidery, fashion, and anything where the stitch should "pop." Isacord Polyester is stronger, fully colorfast (chlorine bleach safe), and won't shrink — the standard for commercial work, uniforms, workwear, and high-volume production. If the item gets washed in hot water or bleached, use Isacord. If it's decorative or fashion, use Madeira.

How many thread colors should my design have?

Most embroidery designs use 2-8 thread colors. Each color means a thread change on your machine (and a potential trim/bird nest if your tension is off). Simple logos: 2-4 colors. Detailed designs can go up to 12-15 but expect 30-60 minutes of machine time and more supervision. Appliqué reduces color changes — large filled areas become fabric instead of 10,000+ stitches.

How accurate are the stitch estimates?

The tool generates the stitches with the same engine our DST/PES/JEF export uses, at the hoop you select, and counts the records the file will declare - needle stitches, jumps, thread cuts and colour stops. On 100 real logos it matched the delivered DST exactly on 99 of them. Thread changes are the machine stops that come out of the same count, not the number of spools in the list. Thread usage assumes ~15m per 1,000 needle stitches; jumps and trims use none. A dedicated digitizing package (Wilcom Hatch, Pulse, Ink/Stitch) will still route and tune a design better than any automatic conversion - the count here tells you what this conversion produces.

Can I convert between Madeira and Brother thread numbers?

Yes — switch between brands using the selector. The tool re-matches all colors to the selected brand instantly. A common use case: your digitizer specifies Madeira 1147 (burgundy), but you only stock Brother thread. Switch to Brother and the tool shows the closest match: ET-030. Compare codes across brands by toggling the dropdown.

Do I need to vectorize my image first?

Yes, this tool works with SVG files. Use the free vectorizer to convert PNG/JPG to SVG first — it also reduces colors during vectorization, which is ideal for embroidery because 200-color photo gradients are impossible to stitch. Aim for 4-8 flat colors max.

Can I export to DST, PES, or JEF?

This tool focuses on thread color mapping, not stitch generation. For embroidery file export (DST for Tajima, PES for Brother, JEF for Janome, EXP for Melco), use dedicated digitizing software. This tool helps you pick the right thread colors before you digitize — a step most digitizers skip and then regret when the finished piece doesn't match the mockup.
