Quick answer
Convert your image at vectosolve.com/svg-for-laser-cutting, pick the CAD Reference preset, set DXF format to R12 (Legacy), enter your part's real width in millimeters or inches, then click Download DXF. The file imports cleanly into ESPRIT 2020, Mastercam X, VCarve V10+, LightBurn and Fusion 360 with no manual cleanup. The preview is free; the DXF download is included in plans from $7.99 a month for 25 images.
Why standard image-to-DXF tools fail in CAM software
Most online vectorizers were built for design software (Illustrator, Affinity, Figma) where path count is irrelevant and color fidelity matters more than geometric simplicity. CAM software does the opposite: every entity in a DXF gets rendered at every zoom level and processed by toolpath generators, so a photo that traces to 75,000 polylines either freezes ESPRIT, refuses to import in Mastercam, or produces 4-hour toolpaths that nobody can run.
The four most common failure modes:
- Entity overload. Generic vectorizers emit 30k–80k paths from a portrait. Legacy CAM (ESPRIT 2020, Mastercam X, ArtCAM) chokes at around 10k.
- Wrong DXF format. Modern tools default to AutoCAD 2013 or later; older CAM only reads up to AutoCAD 2000 reliably, and some plasma controllers want R12.
- Unitless scale. DXF without
$INSUNITSis interpreted as centimeters by Fusion 360, inches by Mach3, and arbitrary by ESPRIT — your part lands 25.4× too large or small. - Doubled outlines. Fill-to-stroke conversion produces two near-parallel paths along every thick edge. CAM cuts both, doubling the time and producing visible double traces.
Comparison: how converters handle CAM-specific output
The table below compares seven raster-to-vector tools on the CAM-specific export options covered in this guide.
| Tool | R12 export | Real-world width | CAM-target preset | Compat. analyzer | Path dedup | Price (as listed, April 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VectoSolve | Free preview; 25 conv. / $7.99/mo | |||||
| Adobe Illustrator (Image Trace) | $22.99/mo | |||||
| Inkscape (Trace Bitmap) | Free | |||||
| Vector Magic | $9.95/mo | |||||
| Scan2CAD | $959 / yr | |||||
| Mastercam built-in trace | N/A | Bundled | ||||
| VCarve Trace Bitmap | N/A | Bundled |
Compat. analyzer = live CAM-readiness check before download. Path dedup = removal of near-parallel duplicate strokes (root cause of doubled outlines in CAM imports).
Best DXF settings by CAM target — cheatsheet
These are the safe defaults we ship in the per-CAM target dropdown. If your tool is not listed, pick "Generic CAM" — AutoCAD 2000, mm, generic-cam layer preset.
| CAM target | DXF format | Units | Layer preset | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ESPRIT 2018+ | R12 Legacy | inch | No CAM layers | R12 sidesteps the LWPOLYLINE issue in ESPRIT 2020. |
| Mastercam X / 2018+ | R12 Legacy | inch | Generic CAM | R12 prevents disconnected polyline import bug. |
| VCarve V10+ | AutoCAD 2000 | mm | VCarve / Aspire | Layer names map to V-Carve / Profile / Pocket / Score toolpaths. |
| LightBurn | AutoCAD 2000 | mm | LightBurn (cut/engrave) | Stroke vs fill mapped to red Cut and blue Engrave layers automatically. |
| Fusion 360 | AutoCAD 2000 | mm | No CAM layers | Fusion needs the modern format and a real-world width to import at correct scale. |
| Plasma controllers (Mach3, LinuxCNC) | R12 Legacy | inch | No CAM layers | Older controllers parse R12 most reliably. |
Step-by-step: convert any image to a CAM-ready DXF in under two minutes
- Upload your image. Drop a PNG, JPG or WebP at vectosolve.com/svg-for-laser-cutting. Maximum file size 25 MB. Logos, scanned drawings, and reference photographs all work.
- Pick the quality preset. Four options:
- High Detail — engraving and texture-rich features.
- Balanced — most logos and signs.
- Clean Cut — simple silhouettes for cutting.
- CAD Reference — outline-only, sub-2,000 entities, ideal for legacy CAM and drawing reference. Auto-switches the DXF format to R12 and applies a 0.5 mm tiny-segment merge.
- (Optional) Apply a preprocess. For portraits and photos with continuous shading, switch the Preprocess selector to "Shading". This runs an edge-preserving bilateral plus a Sauvola adaptive threshold so smooth tonal areas (cheek, hair) flatten while sharp features (lip lines, eyelashes) survive. For high-contrast logos, "Clean" (contrast + denoise + Otsu binarize) is faster and good enough.
- Click Convert. The image is traced server-side; result returns in 4–8 seconds.
- Configure DXF export. Pick your CAM target from the dropdown (ESPRIT, Mastercam, VCarve, LightBurn, Fusion 360, Generic). Format, units and layer preset auto-fill. Enter the real-world width of your part (e.g. 100 mm or 5.5 inch).
- Watch the live compatibility analyzer. A green "Simple" or blue "Medium" badge means import will be instant. Amber "Heavy" or red "Extreme" means re-vectorize with the CAD Reference preset (a one-click button right inside the warning panel).
- Download. Pick "Download DXF only" for a single file, or the ZIP for SVG + DXF + PNG plus a README with import instructions tailored to your CAM target.
- Import in your CAM software. File > Open (or File > Import Vectors). Geometry lands at the exact width you specified; no manual rescaling needed.
Per-software guide
ESPRIT 2020 / ESPRIT Edge (Hexagon)
ESPRIT chokes above ~10,000 entities and silently drops imports above 50,000. Always use the CAD Reference preset for photos. Export as R12 Legacy, units inch, no CAM-layer preset. After File > Open, every contour lands on layer 0; manually assign toolpaths per layer.
See the dedicated ESPRIT Image-to-DXF page for R12 settings and troubleshooting.
Mastercam (X, 2018+, 2026)
Mastercam's R12 polyline translator occasionally imports closed contours as disconnected line segments. After File > Open, run Xform > Join Entities with a small tolerance (0.01 mm) to rejoin. Use the Generic CAM layer preset for separate Cut, Engrave, Pocket and Score layers that map to standard toolpath types.

Vectric VCarve / Aspire (V10+)
VCarve auto-creates layers from DXF layer names. Pick the VCarve / Aspire CAM preset and your DXF arrives with VCARVE, PROFILE, POCKET, SCORE layers ready for one-click toolpath assignment. Use AutoCAD 2000 format (R12 also works but offers no advantage in VCarve V10+). Set units to mm to match Vectric's default project setup.

LightBurn (laser)
LightBurn maps DXF colors to its 30-color layer palette automatically. The LightBurn CAM preset emits red strokes for cut paths (mapped to layer C00) and blue fills for engrave (C01). Import with File > Import. Modern AutoCAD 2000 format reads natively, no need for R12.

Fusion 360 (Autodesk)
Fusion 360 assumes centimeters when no unit is declared in the DXF — the most common cause of "my drawing imported 100× too big" complaints. Always set the Real-world width field in VectoSolve to your part's actual dimensions, then in Fusion: Create Sketch > Insert > Insert DXF, set units to match (mm or inch), and the geometry imports at exact scale. Use AutoCAD 2000 format — Fusion does not benefit from R12.
CAD as drawing reference (artists, illustrators)
Photo-to-CAD-outline as a precision light-table is a workflow used by portrait artists, muralists, and CNC-assisted illustrators. Use the CAD Reference preset, R12 DXF, drop the result on a locked layer in AutoCAD or DraftSight, then sketch over it freehand.

Advanced techniques: control which features are preserved
For portraits, the silhouette pass alone often loses important features (eyes disappear into shadow, lips merge with chin) while still retaining pollution from cheek shading. The dashboard exposes four composable tools to fix this.
Focus Regions
Drag a rectangle on the original photo around an eye or detail area. That crop is re-vectorized at High Detail and merged into the silhouette layer at correct scale and position. Each region becomes its own DXF layer in the ZIP.
Click Points
Click each feature you want preserved (eyes, lip corners, nostrils). Each click spawns a small high-detail crop in seconds — no rectangle dragging.
Shading Filter
Edge-preserving bilateral filter plus Sauvola adaptive threshold. Flattens smooth tonal gradients (cheek lighting, hair shadow) while keeping sharp edges (lip lines, eyelashes) intact.
Paint Mask
Brush-paint a freeform mask. Preserve mode keeps only the painted area; Ignore mode drops only the painted area. Outline the contours you care about (eyebrows, lips) and let the rest disappear.
All four tools compose. Typical portrait workflow: paint a Preserve mask around the features → run Shading Filter preprocess → choose CAD Reference preset → add Click Points on the eyes for extra detail → download the combined DXF. Total time: under three minutes.
Common errors and how to fix them
ESPRIT shows "Unable to import" or stalls during File > Open
Cause: DXF has too many entities (above 10k) or uses LWPOLYLINE format that the ESPRIT translator parses inefficiently.
Fix: Re-vectorize with the CAD Reference preset and export as R12 Legacy. Aim for under 2,000 entities so ESPRIT imports quickly.
Lines look doubled on the silhouette in Mastercam or LightBurn
Cause: Photo vectorization's fill-to-stroke conversion produced two near-parallel paths along thick edges.
Fix: VectoSolve runs a two-pass dedup (byte-equal, then geometric for near-parallel paths within 0.8% of the SVG diagonal) before DXF export. If you imported a DXF from another tool, open in Inkscape, Path > Simplify (Ctrl+L), and re-export.
DXF imports at the wrong scale (100× too big or 25.4× too small)
Cause: DXF is unitless. Without $INSUNITS in the header, Fusion 360 assumes cm, Mach3 assumes inch, ESPRIT picks whatever you last set.
Fix: Use the Real-world width field to write the dimension into $INSUNITS automatically. In your CAM, set the import unit to match the value you entered (mm if you typed 100, inch if you typed 5.5).
Detail regions appear oversized after import
Cause: Each detail region was exported as a separate DXF scaled to the full part width, instead of its proportional crop dimensions.
Fix: VectoSolve merges focus regions into the silhouette's coordinate system before DXF export — the combined DXF lands at correct scale and position. Use the "Download DXF only" button (default) instead of the per-region ZIP unless you need distinct toolpaths per layer.
Cheek shading is traced as a path even though the lips are missing
Cause: Global threshold preprocesses (like Otsu binarize in Clean Source) cannot distinguish smooth shading from sharp features — both get the same brightness cutoff.
Fix: Switch the Preprocess selector to Shading. The bilateral + Sauvola pipeline handles each region locally: smooth shading is flattened, sharp transitions are preserved.
