Vector files with VCarve-ready layer structure, no manual sorting
VCarve Pro and Aspire are the go-to tools for sign-making, v-carving, and hobby CNC routing. Vectric's own image-trace tools work, but the output is noisy and you still have to manually sort paths into v-carve, profile, pocket, and score layers before generating toolpaths. VectoSolve ships DXF files with those exact layer names pre-applied — VCARVE, PROFILE, POCKET, SCORE — so VCarve's toolpath dialogs auto-recognize them. Hobbyists save 15 minutes per project; sign shops save 30–60 minutes per job.

Step-by-step workflow
- 1
Upload your sign or logo
Sign-shop workflow: take a phone photo of the customer's hand-drawn sketch, or import their logo JPG. Both work. For cleanest v-carve results, high-contrast images with bold shapes outperform photos with gradients.
- 2
Pick the preset by intent
"Bold Cut" for logos and most sign work — keeps interior detail for pocket toolpaths. "CAD Reference" for profile-only cuts. "Fine Detail" for intricate decorative work like filigree or ornate lettering.
- 3
Export DXF with VCarve CAM preset
In the DXF panel, choose "VCarve / Aspire — VCARVE / PROFILE / POCKET / SCORE" as the CAM preset. Our exporter auto-classifies paths: stroke-only → PROFILE, narrow closed regions → VCARVE, larger filled regions → POCKET.
- 4
Open in VCarve + generate toolpaths
In VCarve: File → Import Vectors → your .dxf. Paths land on their pre-named layers. Select a layer, hit "V-Carve / Engraving Toolpath" (for VCARVE layer), "Profile Toolpath" (for PROFILE), or "Pocket Toolpath" (for POCKET). No manual selection sorting.
What usually goes wrong
- ×VCarve's built-in Trace Bitmap is noisy — typical output needs 10–20 min of cleanup with Node Edit before it's usable.
- ×No layer structure in Trace Bitmap output — every toolpath requires manually boxing the right paths.
- ×Photos with gradients (skin, shadows) produce hundreds of tiny regions that Vectric recognizes as pocket candidates even when you wanted an outline only.
- ×Imported SVGs from other tools often come in with wrong scale — Vectric assumes 96 DPI but some tools export at 72.
How we solve it
- ✓DXF exported as AutoCAD 2000 — exactly what VCarve Pro expects.
- ✓Units declared explicitly in the DXF header ($INSUNITS) — no 25.4× scale errors.
- ✓Live compatibility analyzer warns if the file is too heavy before you even download.
- ✓Pure LWPOLYLINE output — no splines, no exploded blocks, chains cleanly.
- ✓Preset clean auto-tunes path count for VCarve Pro.
“We stopped running Trace Bitmap inside VCarve completely. Importing a pre-layered DXF saved us the node-cleanup step on every single sign. At our volume that is roughly two hours saved per week.”
Manual workflow vs. VectoSolve
| Task | Manual workflow | With VectoSolve |
|---|---|---|
| Logo to v-carve + profile cut | Trace Bitmap in VCarve (10 min) → Node cleanup (10 min) → Manual layer assignment (5 min) | 15 sec upload + 10 sec export + drag into VCarve |
| Sign with multiple depth zones (raised letters + v-carve border) | 30 min of path grouping and layer naming | Auto-classified into VCARVE / POCKET / PROFILE layers |
Real use cases
Custom wooden sign for Etsy
Customer provides a family name + decorative border sketch → vectorize with Bold Cut → VCarve CAM preset → v-carve lettering + profile cut border + pocket for insert slot. One-click toolpath generation per layer.
CNC router business card engraving
Logos arriving as JPGs → batch through VectoSolve → VCarve toolpath templates apply automatically via layer names → 50 cards cut in an afternoon.
Troubleshooting — common VCarve Pro errors
ErrorPaths import on random color layers in VCarve▾
The DXF has no layer table or uses color-by-entity instead of color-by-layer.
Select the VCarve CAM preset in our DXF export — this emits a proper layer table with VCARVE / PROFILE / POCKET / SCORE layers that VCarve reads on import.
ErrorV-Carve toolpath misses the interior regions▾
Paths aren't closed, so V-Carve can't compute a medial axis.
Our exporter closes paths automatically (group code 70 = 1 on the polyline). If you still see open contours, check the live complexity analyzer — "extreme" heavy files sometimes have fragmented paths that split across the 5,000-entity threshold.
ErrorImport is 25% too small or too large▾
Unit mismatch between DXF (assumed unitless by VCarve) and your project.
Enter the real-world width in our export panel. We write $INSUNITS so VCarve imports at true scale. Inside VCarve, set Job Setup units to match before importing.

Technical deep-dive — why it works
- ▸VCarve's Layer Manager reads the DXF TABLES section to auto-create layers. Our exporter writes proper LAYER definitions with color codes (VCARVE = magenta / 6, PROFILE = red / 1, POCKET = green / 3, SCORE = blue / 5).
- ▸Paths are classified by shape heuristics: narrow closed regions → VCARVE candidate, larger closed regions → POCKET, stroke-only → PROFILE. You can override this inside VCarve's layer-selection dialog.
- ▸R12 and AC1015 both work. AC1015 (default) gives slightly smaller files; R12 is safer if you ever need to open in older Cut2D versions.
FAQ — VCarve Pro specific
Will the layer names match VCarve's default toolpath types?▾
Yes. VCARVE, PROFILE, POCKET, and SCORE are the names VCarve's toolpath dialogs look for by default. Assigning a toolpath to a named layer takes one click instead of the usual box-select dance.
Is V11 supported?▾
Yes — VCarve V11 reads R12 and AutoCAD 2000 DXFs identically to V8-V10. AC1015 (AutoCAD 2000) is our default and works across every VCarve version since 2014.
Can I use this for Aspire 3D relief carving?▾
The vector part yes (Aspire imports DXF the same as VCarve). For 3D relief you still need a greyscale heightmap, which VCarve/Aspire generates from your vectors via the 2-Rail Sweep or Component tools.
