Turn any image into Mastercam-ready chainable geometry
Mastercam is the backbone of North American job-shop CNC — but its image-import story is stuck in the early 2000s. Bringing in a customer's logo photo or a hand-drawn sketch means either licensing a vectorizer like Scan2CAD ($599), buying Mastercam's own "Art" module, or hand-tracing in the wireframe editor. None of those produce DXFs that chain cleanly into a toolpath on the first try. VectoSolve solves this by emitting clean R12 DXF files, POLYLINE entities with their VERTEX records, at the simplification and entity density that Mastercam's Chain Manager actually likes — works across X9, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2024.

Step-by-step workflow
- 1
Upload your reference image
Phone photos work fine. For best results use a well-lit, high-contrast shot — Mastercam chains work better on clear outlines than blurry photos. Sketches on white paper scan excellently.
- 2
Choose preset based on end goal
CAD Reference: outline-only, perfect for 2D profile toolpaths. Bold Cut: keeps moderate detail, good for engraving toolpaths. Standard: most detail, better for Surface High Speed roughing from photos of physical parts.
- 3
Export DXF R12, inch units
Most Mastercam shops work imperial — we default laser niches to mm but you can flip to inch in the DXF panel. Set target width to your actual stock size so geometry imports at 1:1 with no rescale needed.
- 4
Import + Chain + Toolpath
In Mastercam: File → Import → DXF. Entities land on layer 1 as POLYLINE, the R12 entity, with their VERTEX records. Use Wireframe → Create → Chain → Window to grab everything, then jump straight to Toolpath → 2D → Contour. No wireframe cleanup needed.
What usually goes wrong
- ×Mastercam X9 through X-series have limited AutoCAD 2013+ DXF support. R12 works everywhere.
- ×Most image-to-vector tools produce splines, which Mastercam's Chain Manager treats as discontinuous geometry — you end up manually joining segments.
- ×No $INSUNITS header = Mastercam assumes the DXF matches your job's units, which often silently rescales parts 25.4× the wrong way.
- ×Mastercam's own Art module is an add-on license ($$$) and still produces noisier output than our CAD Reference preset.
How we solve it
- ✓DXF exported as R12 (legacy) — exactly what Mastercam expects.
- ✓Units declared explicitly in the DXF header ($INSUNITS) — no 25.4× scale errors.
- ✓Live compatibility analyzer warns if the file is too heavy before you even download.
- ✓Pure LWPOLYLINE output — no splines, no exploded blocks, chains cleanly.
- ✓Preset cad auto-tunes path count for Mastercam.
“My old workflow was Photoshop → Illustrator → DXF → an hour of cleanup in Mastercam. VectoSolve replaced all of that. I'm chaining geometry from a customer JPG in under two minutes now.”
Manual workflow vs. VectoSolve
| Task | Manual workflow | With VectoSolve |
|---|---|---|
| Customer logo to engraving toolpath | 25 min: trace in Inkscape → save SVG → Scan2CAD import → Mastercam wireframe cleanup | 20 sec upload + 10 sec export, chains cleanly on first try |
| Phone photo of a part to 2D profile | 45 min: crop in Photoshop → trace in Illustrator → DXF export → Mastercam cleanup | 30 sec end-to-end with CAD Reference preset |
| Match imported scale to stock size | Measure imported geometry, compute ratio, apply XForm Scale | Type real-world width in export panel |
Real use cases
Job-shop logo engraving
Customer emails a JPG logo, needs it engraved on 6061 aluminum plates. Vectorize → CAD Reference preset → DXF R12 inch → chain → 1/16" ball engrave toolpath.
Signage shop profile cuts
Decorative panel designs arriving as customer artwork → DXF → 2D contour toolpath on a router. The LightBurn CAM preset lets the shop run the same file on their CO2 laser too.
Reverse-engineering from photos
Customer brings in a worn-out cam lobe profile photographed against graph paper. Vectorize with Bold Cut, import to Mastercam, trace the profile in wireframe using our output as a reference.
Troubleshooting — common Mastercam errors
Error"Chain is open" when trying to create a 2D toolpath▾
The vectorizer produced disjoint segments — common with splines or with traces that don't auto-close contours.
Re-export with VectoSolve — our polylines carry an explicit close flag (group code 70 = 1) on closed contours, in both the R12 and the AutoCAD 2000 output. Mastercam's Chain Manager picks up closure automatically.
ErrorImported geometry is 25.4× too large or too small▾
Unit mismatch between DXF and Mastercam job.
Match the DXF export "Units" field to your Mastercam job (inch or mm). Also use the "Real-world width" field to lock the physical size.
ErrorChain Manager picks up unwanted interior loops▾
Filled regions were exported as closed paths on the same layer as outer contours.
For profile-only toolpaths, use the CAD Reference preset — it emits outer contour only. For pocket/engraving use Bold Cut and manually deselect interior chains, or use our LightBurn CAM preset, which puts each fill colour on its own layer so you can select a whole operation at once.
ErrorMastercam reports "No valid DXF entities found"▾
The file uses SPLINE or 3DFACE entities that the current Mastercam version can't parse.
Our exporter never emits splines. If you're seeing this error you're importing a DXF from another tool — regenerate via VectoSolve.

Technical deep-dive — why it works
- ▸Mastercam's Chain Manager wants polylines that declare their own closure. Our exporter always sets group code 70 = 1 for closed paths, on the R12 POLYLINE and on the AutoCAD 2000 LWPOLYLINE alike, so Chain Manager auto-detects closed contours.
- ▸R12 format uses only the basic entity set that every Mastercam version understands: LINE, CIRCLE, ARC, POLYLINE. No BLOCK INSERT nesting, no XDATA, no proxy entities.
- ▸Coordinates are in decimal units with 4-digit precision ($LUPREC = 4), matching Mastercam's default display precision.
- ▸$EXTMIN / $EXTMAX define the drawing extents so Mastercam's "Fit to Screen" on import zooms to the actual geometry instead of the paper bounds.
FAQ — Mastercam specific
Should I use mm or inch for my DXF export?▾
Match it to your Mastercam job units. Most North American job shops work imperial (inch); most EU and Asian shops work metric (mm). The key is consistency — mismatch causes the classic 25.4× scale error.
Can I use this for Art toolpaths?▾
Yes, but the Bold Cut or Standard preset works better for Art toolpaths than CAD Reference — Art needs some internal detail to generate meaningful texture. For profile/engrave toolpaths, stick with CAD Reference.
Do I still need Scan2CAD or Art Module?▾
Honestly, not for most vectorization needs. Scan2CAD is worth it if you need raster-to-vector with OCR for dimensioned drawings. For artwork → DXF workflow, VectoSolve covers 95% of use cases.
Will this work with Mastercam for SolidWorks?▾
Yes — Mastercam for SolidWorks imports DXF via its Integrated Import feature. Our R12 output is recognized the same as standalone Mastercam.
