Laser Material Test Card Generator

Stop guessing power and speed on a new material. Generate a labelled test grid where each cell is its own color and layer, run it once, and keep the square that looks best. For LightBurn, Glowforge and xTool. Downloads as SVG in real millimetres.

One test sheet beats a pile of ruined ones

A new material or thickness means new settings. A test card finds them in a single run.

Sweep both axes

Power varies across the columns, speed down the rows, so one card covers the whole settings space at a glance.

A layer per cell

Every cell is a unique color. LightBurn splits them into layers, Glowforge and xTool into steps, so each square cuts at its own setting.

Labelled in the cut

The power and speed is engraved under each square, so you read the result straight off the material with no legend to lose.

Cuts at true size

The SVG carries real millimetre dimensions and a matching viewBox, so the card imports at exactly the size you set.

Assign the settings on your machine

LightBurn

Import the SVG. Each cell lands on its own color layer. Click a layer, read the label under its square, and set that layer to that power and speed. Frame and run.

Glowforge

Upload the SVG in the Glowforge app. Each color shows up as a separate step. Set every step to the power and speed engraved under its square, then print.

xTool

Open the SVG in xTool Creative Space. Each color is a separate object you can set independently. Match each one to the label under its square and process.

Tip: start with a wide range to find the rough zone, then generate a second card with a narrow range around the best square to fine-tune.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a laser material test card?
It is a grid of small squares, each engraved or cut at a different power and speed. You run it once on a new material, look at which square came out best, and read off the settings. It saves you from guessing and ruining a full sheet every time you try a new material or thickness.
How does each cell get a different power and speed?
Every cell in the grid is a unique color. When you import the SVG, LightBurn puts each color on its own layer and the Glowforge and xTool apps treat each color as a separate step. You then set each layer or step to the power and speed that is engraved underneath that square (the label reads power/speed). Run the whole card once and every square cuts at its own setting.
Does this work for Glowforge and xTool, not just LightBurn?
Yes, and that is the point. LightBurn has a built-in test generator, but the Glowforge and xTool apps do not. Because every cell here is a distinct color, those apps let you assign a different setting per color, so you get the same test on machines that have no built-in tool. The labels are engraved into the card so you can read the result without any legend.
Is the card the right physical size?
Yes. The SVG is written with real width and height in millimetres and a matching viewBox, so it imports at the exact size shown (for example a 6 by 6 grid of 12mm cells). No guessing the scale, no surprise resizing.
Engrave test or cut test?
Both. Engrave mode fills each square so you can judge engraving depth and shade per setting. Cut mode outlines each square so you can find the lowest power and highest speed that still cuts through cleanly. Switch between them with one click.
Is it free? Is anything uploaded?
It is completely free with no login. The card is generated in your browser with JavaScript and nothing is uploaded to any server. Download the SVG and load it straight into your laser software.

This tool stays free. The conversions are what cost.

You came here to run a material test card, and that does not change. But if you also turn customer images into cut-ready vectors most weeks, paying per file adds up fast. The year is $49 for 25 conversions every month, which is 0.16 a file over the year.
