If you work with cutting machines, you've encountered both SVG and DXF files. Both are vector formats, but they serve different purposes. Here's a clear breakdown of when to use each.

When to Use SVG

Best for: Cricut, Silhouette, web graphics, crafting, vinyl cutting

  • Cricut Design Space requires SVG (or PNG for print-then-cut)
  • Silhouette Studio supports SVG in Designer Edition and above
  • Web use — SVGs render natively in browsers
  • Color-critical designs with gradients and effects
  • Sharing designs online

When to Use DXF

Best for: CNC machines, laser cutters, CAD software, engineering

  • CNC routers (Fusion 360, VCarve, Easel)
  • Laser cutters (LightBurn, RDWorks, LaserGRBL)
  • Silhouette Studio Basic (doesn't support SVG!)
  • AutoCAD and other CAD software
  • 3D modeling and engineering drawings

The Silhouette Studio Gotcha

Here's something many crafters don't realize: Silhouette Studio Basic edition only supports DXF, not SVG. You need the Designer Edition ($50 upgrade) to import SVG files. If you're on the Basic edition, convert your SVGs to DXF first.

Recommendation

For most crafters: use SVG. It's the universal format for crafting machines, smaller file sizes, and works on the web.

For CNC/laser users: use DXF. It's the standard in CAD/CAM software and preserves precise geometry for machining.

For maximum flexibility: keep both versions. Convert your images to SVG first, then export to DXF when needed.
