CAD programs work with lines, arcs and polylines, and a JPG or PNG has none of those. Converting an image to CAD means tracing it into geometry first. VectoSolve does that and writes a DXF, the exchange format CAD programs import: R12 (AC1009), closed polylines, one layer per fill colour, with the units declared in the file. It is a trace, not a measured drawing, so set the real dimension in CAD before you build on it.
What "image to CAD" can and cannot mean
People search for an image to CAD converter for two different jobs, and only one of them is a conversion.
- Turning a picture into geometry you can cut, engrave, extrude or trace over: a logo for a sign, a silhouette for a laser, a sketch for a decorative panel, the outline of an old part as a starting point. A trace does this well, and the DXF arrives as closed shapes ready for CAM or for an extrude in Fusion 360.
- Recovering a dimensioned drawing from a photo of a part. No tool reads intent from pixels: the trace gives you the edges it sees, with every imperfection of the photo. Use it as a reference layer, then dimension and redraw.
Knowing which job you have saves the disappointment. For scanned plans and blueprints there is a dedicated route in the floor plan vectorizer and the scan to CAD converter; for a PDF drawing, PDF to DXF.
From the DXF to your CAD program
AutoCAD: open the DXF, check the units, scale by reference, then SAVEAS DWG if your project lives in DWG. Fusion 360: Insert, Insert DXF, pick a plane, and the closed polylines become sketch profiles you can extrude. SolidWorks: open the DXF as a new part or import it onto a sketch plane.
Before you send it to a machine, drop it on the DXF checker: it shows the units and the real size the file declares, which catches the classic millimetre-versus-inch mistake. If the image is a logo rather than a drawing, Logo to DXF covers the cutting side, and PNG to DXF the transparent-background case.

6 questions about Image to DXF conversion
Not from this converter: it writes DXF only. DWG is the native AutoCAD format, and AutoCAD opens a DXF directly; save it from there with SAVEAS and pick a DWG version. Most other CAD programs import DXF too, which is why it is the format used to move drawings between them.
At the size the trace declares, not at the size of the real object, because a photo or a scan carries no dimensions. Measure one known feature after import and scale the whole drawing by reference (in AutoCAD, SCALE then the Reference option). The units are written in the file, millimetres by default, so your program knows what one unit means.
It is as accurate as the image. A trace follows the edges it sees; it does not know that a hole was meant to be exactly 10 mm or that two edges were parallel. For a logo, a sign, a decorative panel or an outline you will check against a sample, it is the fast route. For a dimensioned part, use the trace as a reference layer and redraw the critical features on top.
Closed polylines on one layer per fill colour, in R12 (AC1009), the version older and newer CAD and CAM programs all read. Curves are written as short straight segments, simplified to within 0.05 mm, so the file stays light enough to edit.
High contrast, shot straight on. Scan a paper drawing rather than photographing it at an angle, because perspective is traced along with everything else. If you photograph a part, put a ruler or a known dimension in the frame: it gives you something to scale from in CAD.
The same conversion also gives you an SVG, a PNG and a G-code file of the same trace, for a laser, a cutter or a CNC sender.
